The trail begins 0.1 mile up the road from the Shavertown Bridge parking area and climbs moderately for 0.3 miles before transitioning into an easy-to-moderate hike along a woods road to a pond and then through mixed forest.

There are multiple hikes within Sam's Point Preserve. One of the quickest is the 1.2-mile trail to Sam's Point Overlook. The hike takes about 45 minutes and offers an amazing view. Many recommend extending the hike to include the ice caves.

Ashokan Reservoir
The Ashokan Reservoir is 8,315 acres of water with 44 miles of shoreline. This gorgeous body of water is available to the public with access that provides fishing along the shore and by row boat. All Row Boats need to be approved and licensed before pushing off into the reservoir, but once adrift you have the opportunity to catch record breaking fish. 

Upper Esopus Creek
The Upper Esopus Creek extends 26 miles upstream of the Ashokan River with water temperatures that remain cool throughout the year. This portion of the creek supports one of the most productive wild trout populations in the Catskills and hosts multiple public access points. 

Sullivan County
Neversink River
Neversink River is recognized by many as the birthplace of fly fishing and provides some of the best conditions for trout fishing due to the consistently cold waters. There are many public access points to this river that provide a bit of hiking for the adventurous who want to partake in this centuries old tradition.

Crystal Lake Wild Forest
The 497-acre Crystal Lake Wild Forest features a 32-acre man-made lake along with seeps, streams, wetlands, and a former beaver pond. Rolling hills encircle the lake, rising to a high point of 1,980 feet, with particularly steep terrain along the eastern shore.

Otsego Lake
Otsego Lake is an excellent place to fish for lake trout, perch, walleye and over 30 other species of fish. There is a state boat launch ramp located in the Village of Cooperstown and a hand launch location in Glimmerglass State Park on the North East side of the lake.

Basswood Pond
Basswood Pond is located in Basswood Pond State Forest and offers public fishing access with a fishing pier on the lake. The pond is stocked annually with rainbow trout and is an excellent spot for learning to fish. 

Delaware County
West Branch Angler Resort
West Branch Angler Resort offers intro to Fly Fishing courses, guided river trips, fishing updates, tips and tricks. Sign up to fish in their 300 acre camp or stop by for fishing tips on your way to your favorite fishing spot. Pepacton Reservoir
The 5,700+ acre Pepacton Reservoir is most popular for its brown trout and smallmouth bass with many trophy fish caught each year. A special permit is needed to fish in this reservoir and can be obtained from the city of New York Board of Water Supply.

The cafe offers breakfast sandwiches with pork belly, housemade kimchi and spam. For lunch you can enjoy pork soup dumplings, which are hard to come by in the Catskill Mountains. Enjoy steamed buns, chive cakes, and noodle and rice bowls. Lucky Catskills is filling a hole in the Catskill region with their soup dumplings, noodles and warming flavors.

Belleayre Mountain has 61 trails, parks and glades, a vertical drop of 1,404 feet, 8 lifts and 4 lodges. Whether you are a beginner or an expert they have something for you. The Catskills and Hudson Valley have wineries, cideries, distilleries, and craft breweries on tap, many of which are set in spectacular countryside."

He mentions must-try dining options such as Lola's in Kingston and Good Night in Woodstock. There are multiple hikes at the Sam's Point Preserve. One of the quickest is the 1.2 mile trail to Sam's Point Overlook. The hike can take around 45 minutes and provides an amazing view. Many recommend lengthening the hike to see the ice caves.

Overlook Mountain Trail

Overlook Mountain Trail is a 5 mile out and back trail that progresses up a steady grade for the majority of the hike. Exciting features on the hike is the Firetower at the top, and the abandoned Overlook Mountain House

Shavertown Trail

The combined length of the Shavertown Trail is 3.3 miles. It leads to two great views of the surrounding mountains and the Pepacton Reservoir. The trail begins 0.1 mile up the road from the Shavertown Bridge parking area and climbs moderately for 0.3 miles before becoming an easy-moderate hike on a woods road to the pond and then through mixed forest.
